The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Delta Research and Education Foundation (DREF), in partnership with the AAAS Directorate for Education and Human Resources Programs, are developing and implementing a 5-year Science and Everyday Experiences (SEE) Initiative, an informal science education project funded by the National Science Foundation. The SEE Initiative will help parents and caregivers of African American elementary and middle school age children (K-8) to develop effective ways to support children's informal science and mathematics learning experiences. SEE includes leadership and professional development activities to both prepare and mobilize the members of the 800+ Delta Chapters to serve as life-long informal science education organizers for family and community science events or as parent educators.
HOW:
The Durham Alumnae Chapter will conduct informal science and mathematics learning experiences for youth in Durham County. This will include working with other organizations to develop and/or sponsor science fairs or other group educational activities throughout the year. In addition, there will be training sessions for others in the community to learn how to conduct these science learning experiences with a particular focus on parents and caregivers training to effectively engage all members of the Durham community.
